Lonicera Nitida a.k.a the Chinese Honeysuckle

The Chinese honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida) is a plant of the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). It is a densely branched shrub with overhanging branches that may grow to 1.5 m high. The leaves are green, elliptical and about 1 cm long. The bloom is in spring with creamy white, fragrant, small flowers. The honeysuckle thrives best in a protected and sheltered place in a good permeable soil. On other soils, such as forest, bush can thrive. Regular pruning is recommended.

The Chinese honeysuckle is a shrubby honeysuckle Lonicera pileata like. Both species are in the early twentieth century, introduced by the famous English plant explorer Ernest Henry Wilson. Wilson was in 1900 in China and was first Lonicera pileata. Eight years later he Lonicera nitida. One of the cultivars of Lonicera nitida bears his name. Other cultivars are Lonicera nitida 'Elegant' Lonicera nitida 'Maigrun' Lonicera nitida and 'Red Tips.'
